Survivor, Ep. 27.12

Paschal English, Survivor Marquesas (Season 4)
Pre-Episode Survivor  Trivia

Tonight is huge. The previews have let a huge cat out of the bag already, so no one should be surprised when tonight's Tribal is absolutely nuts! As previewed, tonight's vote will be a deadlock, which means...duh duh duh (ominous music)...they draw rocks! For only the 2nd time in the 27 seasons of Survivor, someone will leave the game simply for drawing a rock! I did a little research before the episode (sorry, my brain doesn't remember every single event of every single season...I wish it did). The last time this historic event took place was in Season 4: Marquesas (otherwise known as the first season of Boston Rob). At the final 4, Paschal English drew the fated purple rock, and was therefore eliminated when he, Kathy Vavrick-O'Brien, Neleh Dennis and Vecepia Towery were deadlocked. Paschal's name had never been written down once up until that point. What a way to go out...let's hope what happens tonight isn't as awful.

Kasama Camp After the Last Tribal

Hayden calls Tyson out and said that everyone is playing for 2nd place if they let Tyson go to the end. Gervase loses it and says that Tyson wouldn't be where he is without him. The mean Gervase, who gloated over beating the other tribe in the first challenge, reared his ugly head again. Tyson didn't appreciate his name being thrown under the bus like that, but Hayden said he had no choice. Following the disruption, Tyson and the rest of the group make the decision that Hayden is next to go, and if he wins immunity, then it's Katie. Uh-oh...I'm so worried for Hayden already and we're only 2 minutes into the episode!

Redemption Island Duel
Laura vs. Tina vs. Caleb

Build a tower of cards...we've seen this one before. They have to reach 8' first or the tallest 2 stacks after 30 minutes.

Laura kicks butt again! She is the winner. Of course, she then turns her attention to Tina and encourage her. Caleb, just like Vytas, didn't have a whole lot of support from the crowd. They were neck-and-neck with 30 seconds left. Caleb had a slight lead, but his entire stack fell over. Tina had lost part of her stack earlier, but not near as much. All she had to do was sit there and look at her stack while the seconds counted out. And with that, Tina stays in it again! Wow, I did not think she would make it past 1 duel, let alone 3!

Laura gives Ciera the clue to the hidden immunity idol. This time she keeps it. With Tyson using the idol during the last Tribal Council, there should be another one rehidden for them to find. Let's see if this one is as hard to find as the last one was.

Kasama Camp
Ciera reads the clue to Tyson, Gervase and Monica. Hayden and Katie decide to spy on them. They see all of them looking for the clue by the water.

Tyson breaks down thinking about Rachel and what he needs to do to stay in the game. Like magic (or a set-up), he finds the idol. He decides to keep it hidden from everyone.

Hayden talks with Gervase to see if he's open to working with him in trying to blindside Tyson. Gervase says he needs to get Ciera for it to work. He doesn't seem completely on-board, but he said that he doesn't mind having Hayden as a possibility. He knows Tyson is playing the game, but he's gotten him this far in the game, so he wants to continue to trust him.

Immunity Challenge
The absolute best possible outcome of this challenge would be for Hayden to win so I don't have to worry about him drawing the purple rock! I don't know if I can watch! Watch Tyson win it when he already has immunity, or watch Monica win it for the 4th time...ugh that would make me sick!

They have to balance balls on top of a pole and maneuver some obstacles. Pretty much everyone drops and has to start over...except Monica.

The second section is making an extension for the pole, which makes it that much harder. Hayden keeps dropping his ball and it is making me so nervous. Monica is making it look like a cake walk.

Monica, Gervase and Tyson make it to the 3rd section, which is an even longer pole while walking on a balance beam. Monica continues to lead followed by Gervase. Meanwhile Katie's ball keeps knocking her on the head. Poor thing...she's just pitiful in challenges.

The last station is unlocking a box of sand bags, and they have to throw the bags and knock over a bunch of pins.

It's Gervase now in the lead, but Monica is very close. And it's Gervase with the win! Well, I guess I'm just glad it wasn't Monica again. But of course, now I have to be extremely worried for Hayden.

Gervase also wins an ice cream reward that he chooses to share with Monica and Tyson.

Kasama Camp
20 more minutes of panic, as we wait to find out who's going to draw the rock. Gervase can't be voted out. If Tyson would play his idol, he couldn't be voted out. That means it would by Hayden, Katie, Ciera or Monica going home.

While Tyson, Gervase and Monica were enjoying their ice cream, Hayden pitches a plan to Ciera. She tells the camera that she has no intention of helping Hayden and Katie. She would be better off if she did...Tyson's too strong of a player to just ride his coattails the entire game. Later, Hayden talks to to both Ciera and Gervase about blindsiding Tyson, and then next week sending Katie home. This would be a perfect plan...why can't it just work out like that?! With them gunning for Hayden, I guess I have to be glad that it comes to a deadlock tie, or he would for sure be the one going.

Tribal Council
Hayden says that Tyson is controlling Ciera and the rest of his followers. Hayden does his best to try to throw a lot of heat toward Tyson to try to sway the votes his way. He has a very good way with words, and he has a lot of good arguments (he didn't win Big Brother by not knowing how to communicate well and persuade people). Ciera continues to stand up for Tyson and "her place in the alliance".  Monica says that 4 is better than 6, and Hayden tells Ciera that she is #4 in their alliance, when she could be at least 3 with them (him and Katie). Gervase blows up and at the same time, thunder and lightning starts, as if on cue. That was kind of freaky! Gervase counts "1, 2, 3, 4", and pointed to Ciera in the #4 spot. Hayden again pointed it out. Gervase said "that's just how I count". Maybe. Maybe because she was the farthest away, she ended up as #4, but maybe that's where he does have her placed. Jeff said that if Ciera isn't 4, then probably Monica is #4 instead. Monica said "perhaps". Hayden said "there's no perhaps about it". Meaning that Tyson and Gervase are 1, 2. Obviously. People would have to be absolutely stupid not to see that. Meanwhile, Aras and Vytas are having a ball watching this go down.

Hayden looks at Katie and whispers "Monica". Tyson tries to convince Ciera that she is not #4 in their alliance. Ciera starts getting pulled in 2 directions: Hayden to her right saying she should make a big move that could potentially win her $1 million and Tyson to her left saying she needs to stick with them because he has never lied to her and he has always protected her. Tyson even tried to convince Ciera that Hayden and Katie were liars and backstabbers. Gervase puts in his 2 cents and says they should draw rocks. Naturally...since he is safe and wouldn't have to draw. The jury was even throwing little looks her way, as if to say "do it...make the move!".

It's at this point that the fight/argument takes a little detour when Tyson tries to make fun of Hayden for saying "Russell" feathers, when Hayden explains that he clearly meant "rustle". Tyson thinks he should have said "ruffle" feathers. Hayden just looked at Tyson like he was stupid and the jury got really confused looks on their faces as well.

Hayden continues pushing Ciera to make them draw rocks, and she really looks like that's the way she is leaning now. Gervase starts getting mean when he says Hayden will be joining the jury, as he shouts "you BELIEVE that", and then on his parchment he writes "Hay done", and then says loud enough for everyone to hear "this isn't Big Brother and you're about to get a lesson in how to play the game". Ugh, Gervase is making me so mad right now! When Hayden goes up to vote, Tyson leans in to Ciera and tells her to stick with them and they can "do this".

The Votes:
Hayden
Hayden
Monica
Monica
Hayden
Monica

Tie (shocker!). Tyson whispers to Ciera "what are you doing". So now they revote, and Hayden and Monica can't vote.

The Revotes:
Monica
Hayden
Monica
Hayden

Tie again! I can't believe this is going to happen. Ciera, Tyson and Katie discuss, and Ciera says she's not budging because she knows she's #4. Monica says "how can you say that?" OK, so either Monica just really wants to convince Ciera to stick with them, or she's stupid enough to believe that she is 1,2 with either Tyson or Gervase and really thinks Ciera is #3.

I am so nervous!. BUT WAIT!!!!! I did not remember that the rules! When the people who revote can't come up with one name to vote out, it is THEM and ONLY THEM who have to draw rocks! That means that not only is Gervase safe (because he had immunity), but Monica and Hayden are also safe!!!! That means that the voters Katie, Ciera, and Tyson draw the rocks!!!!!!!

It's Katie that draws the white rock (it was purple last time).

Tyson asks Katie for a hug and tells her she had balls to do what she did, but then quickly points out that she has a chair over there (in the jury). Tyson glares at Ciera, Ciera says "don't glare at me". Hayden apologizes to Katie, and she tells him to go get 'em.

As they leave the Tribal Council area, Hayden must have been so psyched that he was still there, that he left his torch. Tyson told him to take it and Hayden said "I guess I need that don't I?", and Tyson replied "if you want it". Poor guy...just another thing for Tyson to make fun of him for.

Final Thoughts
I was trying to figure out why Hayden told Katie and Ciera to vote for Monica instead of Tyson. I thought that was an odd last-minute switch. However, Hayden is smart. This may be his 1st time on Survivor, but he obviously knew the rules about drawing rocks. If they were going to go to a tie-break, he knew that if they were voting for Tyson, he would be immune from drawing rocks! Way to go Hayden for being smart!

I have some mixed feelings right now, and tonight's episode has been a wild rollercoaster of emotions for me:
1. Upset that Hayden didn't win the immunity challenge
2. Disgusted that Tyson found another hidden immunity idol, without much looking
3. Mad that Gervase or Monica wasn't willing to make a big move and vote for Tyson, therefore avoiding drawing rocks
4. Nervous as all get-out, knowing that the ultimate result of the vote was going to end in a tie and a drawing of rocks, which meant that Hayden could possibly be eliminated in the most awful way possible (next to an injury or illness)
5. Ecstatic that I didn't remember the rules, where the nominees are immune from the rock draw and only the voters draw rocks!
6. Bummed that Katie, Hayden's only solid ally, drew the white rock and was eliminated; however, she hasn't done anything in this game, so out of everyone, she "deserved" to go before any of the others (as much as I would have loved for it to have been Tyson).
7. Saddened that on this night, Katie joins her mom Tina on Redemption Island, only a day after they lost their brother and son (respectively) in a car accident. My thoughts and prayers go out to them during this devastating time.

So where does this leave us for next week? Hayden is STILL in a ton of trouble! He lost Katie, his only solid ally. He might have Ciera now, and he should, because Tyson and Gervase won't want anything to do with her now that she flopped on them. The preview shows Ciera telling Monica that Tyson and Gervase have been talking crap about her and are just using her. She isn't too happy about this. So....it would be incredibly awesome if she now flips sides over with Hayden and Ciera, to make it 3 vs. 2. At that point, maybe even Gervase will see that he is on a sinking ship and decide to turn on Tyson to give himself one more week. Things are not looking good for Hayden in challenges, and since Tyson, Gervase and Monica (the 3-time winner) are still in the game, depending on the challenge, he could be looking to at least beat Ciera so he's not in last place! That is so sad! Let's give this man a challenge he can dominate already! He's not a weakling, and he's not stupid...so give him a physical challenge or a straight-up puzzle!

Another thing to consider is who will be coming back from Redemption. The odds are in Laura M.'s favor. Who would she align with? Odds are that she would join her daughter and Hayden. If it would be Tina coming back, there's a strong chance she would go with her original tribe of Tyson, Gervase and Monica...that would be a big problem for Hayden. Let's face it, unless Tina refuses to participate in the challenge against her daughter (which the preview shows to be a possibility) and Laura M. COMPLETELY self-destructs, there's no way that Katie is coming back. If she would, that would be a good thing for Hayden and Ciera. So many things to consider!
