American Idol, Ep. 13.14 and 13.15

Tonight, the competition really begins. The Top 13 all go head to head. The theme for tonight is "This is Me". They will pick songs that represent them.

Something to note about the new voting system:
  1. The contestants will have 1 phone number for the entire season..it won't change every week depending on their singing order
  2. Voting on Google and the apps will go to 10 AM the next morning, while phone voting is open uphours after Voting can begin as soon as the episode starts airing
Dexter
I wasn't really feeling this performance tonight for some reason. I don't know if it's because his song was so "country" or what. I didn't think he really sang it that great either. Not his best performance. I don't think he was very original or creative with this song choice. Totally agreed with everything the judges said.
My Score: 6

Malaya
I don't really think she "sang" this song. It sounded more like she was speak-singing the verses. I don't think it showed off her voice very well. She definitely had a lot of energy, but again, I was not very impressed with this performance at all.
My Score: 5

Kristen
She picked a great song, but she was not hitting the notes at the beginning, they were just off by a smidgen. Once she got to the chorus, it was a lot better.
My Score: 7

Ben
This was a really fun performance. I think he did a really good job with the fast lyrics, and adding some of his own personality to it. He is really surprising me and impressing me every time he sings.
My Score: 9

C.J.
Yay, the old C.J. is back! No more goofy hat, he's back to his good old ballcap. I think the hat really held him back last week. The song was wrong and he just didn't look or sound comfortable. This week, he's back to the C.J. I fell in love with in the audition and Hollywood week. He was having so much fun, and his voice sounded great. Awesome performance!
My Score: 10

MK
Yuck, yuck and more yuck! I didn't like this song AT ALL! This is not the type of stuff she should be singing. Last week's John Legend song was where she belongs. This was just awful. It didn't show off her voice at all. It was just all over the place and I just didn't get it at all. I don't even think her vocals were good. There's only a select number of things that she sounds good singing, and this wasn't it.
My Score: 2

Majesty
I loved this performance! It was a great song for her and she performed it really well.
My Score: 8

Jena
This is one of my all-time favorite songs. Great song choice! I think she did a great job. This is one of my favorite performances of hers. Much better than last week's song.
My Score: 8

Alex
Another great song choice for Alex, and another one tonight. He actually sounds a lot like Jason Mraz. He did a lot of cool things with his voice and he had a great falsetto. His high note was really spot-on and was incredible.
My Score: 8

Jessica
This is such a great song, one of my favorites. I love this song for her. I like this side of her so much better than the country side that she was trying to go for last week. This was 100x better! I hope she sings songs like this from now on. She still looks a little uncomfortable on stage, so she needs to work on that.
My Score: 8

Emily
Her low notes were a little off, but once she got to the chorus, it was beautiful. Definitely the prettiest performance of the night.
My Score: 9

Sam
Love Matchbox Twenty, so I loved this song choice for him. I love when he plays with his guitar. I think he did a really good job with the song. We don't hear people cover them on this show, and there's probably a reason, because not just anyone can sing like Rob Thomas. I thought he did a great job. I really enjoyed it. I love Sam!
My Score: 9

Caleb
Caleb is such a rockstar. I don't think there's ever been anyone quite like him on Idol before. He just nails every performance from top to bottom. I didn't know this song, but he did a great job with it. I don't know if I've said this yet, but Caleb really reminds me of Jack Black in School of Rock. He looks a little like him and he sure sings/dances like him.
My Score: 10

My Bottom 3: MK, Dexter, Malaya
Most Likely will be the Bottom 3: Kristen, Ben, C.J.
My Pick to Go Home: MK
Most Likely will Go Home: Kristen

The Results

Bottom 3: Malaya, MK, Kristen

Going Home: Kristen

Man, if I would have listened to my gut, I could have had 2 in the Bottom 3 instead of just 1. I'm so surprised that MK and Malaya were actually in the bottom! I was really banking on the popularity that those 2 have had up to this point. People have just been goo goo over MK and Malaya has been so fun and goofy, that I thought she would stand out and wouldn't actually be in the bottom.

Survivor, Ep. 28.1

Season 28 is here! The theme of this season is: Brawn vs. Brains vs. Beauty. If you missed by preview article and cast bios, you can read it here.

The "Brawn" tribe is named Aparri, and their tribe color is orange.
The "Brains" tribe is named Luzon, and their tribe color is green.
The "Beauty" tribe is named Solana, and their tribe color is purple.

The tribes come in for the first time and see each other. Probst asks a few of them to decide what group they are grouped as. Then, without talking to each other before they got there, they had to pick a leader.

Sarah is picked for Aparri (The Brawn)
David is picked for Luzon (The Brains)
LJ is picked for Solana (The Beauty)

The leaders then have to decide who on their tribe is the weakest, and who the tribe could do without. Each person picked their "weakest" for very different reasons.

Sarah, for Brawn picks Trish
David, for Brains picks Garrett
LJ, for Beauty picks Morgan

The weakest people are separated, and they are going to be sent to their camp ahead of the others, via helicopter. Once there, they will make an important decision for their tribe. They have the choice of getting an extra bag of rice for the tribe, or taking a clue to the hidden immunity idol. The rest of the tribes get maps and they have to make their way there on their own.

Brains - Luzon
Garrett chooses to look for the idol. He makes quick work to get started looking, and after digging in the water, he found the idol! He was ready to make David pay for thinking he was the weakest.

Spencer didn't agree with David's choice to immediately ostracize Garrett, who would clearly be an asset to the tribe.

J'Tia took control of telling everyone how to build the shelter, right down to the number of poles and how long they should be and how high they should go. Bossy, bossy, bossy! And of course she didn't lift a finger to help. That really rubbed Kass and David the wrong way. J'Tia swore that the bamboo would hold all their weight because it was all about the structure. One person sat on it, and it crumbled to pieces. Whoops!

Brawn - Aparri
Trish (aka "this season's Sherri") chooses to help the tribe. She told the group that she chose the extra bag of rice over a clue to the idol. She wanted to make sure that they didn't see her as the weakest.

Cliff's tribe didn't really recognize him, with the exception of Woo, who was a big fan.

Tony lied to the tribe and said he was a contractor. Sarah asked him if he was a cop, and he lied! She said he totally looked like a cop, and she was pretty sure he was lying about being a cop. She said she didn't trust him, and he needed to go.

Beauty - Solana
Morgan chooses to look for the idol. Morgan, too, started looking right away for the idol. Unfortunately, the rest of the tribe makes it to camp before she could find it. She decides to lie about her decision. She said her decision was to choose between supplies and comfort, and she chose the bag of rice and building materials that were already there. Good thinking! They totally bought it. LJ was already thinking that she had an idol.

The guys pretty quickly made fire by themselves, without flint! So much for being just "pretty" people. They seem to know what they're doing.

The Bachelor, Ep. 18.8

Episode Summary
  • Before Rose Ceremony Elimination: Andi eliminates herself
  • Remaining Girls (2): Clare and Nikki

St. Lucia - Overnight Dates

Clare
Clare is nervous because she isn't sure what her answer to Juan Pablo will be if he asks her to spend the night in the fantasy suite. She is worried that the same thing will happen, like the whole swimming in the ocean fiasco.

The date started on a boat, and they talked about the hometown visit. Finally something that wasn't all about her dad!

She thinks that tonight is going to be the right time to tell him that she loves him.

Later, she wants to talk about being a step-mom to Camila. Wow, 2 conversations that aren't about her dad! Maybe she's finally moving on. She said she knows she already has a mom, but she knows that she could love her too.

Fantasy Suite Card Time--she said she respects how he feels about wanting to be a good example for his daughter, and that she hadn't fully taken that into consideration the last time. Even so, because now they are on the same page, she accepts.

JP asks her what she's thinking and she said that she is loving falling in love with him.

The Bachelor, Ep. 18.7

Episode Summary
  • Nikki-Kansas City, MO
  • Andi-Atlanta, GA
  • Renee-Sarasota, FL
  • Clare-Sacramento, CA
  • Rose Ceremony Elimination (1): Renee
  • Remaining Girls (3): Andi, Clare, Nikki

Nikki-Kansas City, MO
Their day consisted of taking in some barbecue. Ribs, ribs and more ribs, and fries. First she stuffed him full of food, and then she puts him on a mechanical bull. He did surprisingly well, and Nikki really enjoyed watching him. After that, she knew that she really wanted to tell him that she was falling in love with him.

JP had a chat with her dad, and he told her dad that he hoped that if he did end up with Nikki that they would also accept him and Camila into their family. Her dad said that he trusts Nikki's judgement, and if he's 100% invested, then they would be accepted whole-heartedly into the family.

When Nikki talked to her dad, he told her that blended families are easy. She said she has a lot of love to give and that her family has given her a great example to follow.

The date ended, and she just didn't feel like it was the right time to tell him she loved him. Did she blow her chance?

I have to say that this is probably the best side of Nikki that we've seen so far. Maybe she's just kind of nasty when she's around the girls, because she seemed kind of like a different person in her hometown and with her family.

Andi-Atlanta, GA

Amazing Race, Ep. 24.1

Season 24 begins, and we have another All-Star season. For the first time, we have some 3-time competitors. It should be another great, exciting season of racing. In case you missed it, here is my preview article with a list of all the competitors and bios.

The 11 teams begin the race in Los Angeles. The racers all convene and are ready to start, when Phil informs the group that a team had to pull out for medical reasons. That team was Bopper & Mark. Bopper has an inflamed pancreas, and if they continued he could potentially die. Phil tells Mark that if he wants to race, they will find him another partner to race with. Bopper tells Mark that he should do it, so he agrees. Mark will be racing with another former racer Mallory, who is also from Kentucky. Mallory competed with her father Gary in Season 17, where they finished 6th, and again in Season 18, where they finished 3rd. Normally, there are tears at the end of the race, but this time, there were tears all around at the beginning of the race for Bopper.

The racers finally take off, and they are headed to China. They first have to find a band member on a football field with matching Chinese symbols on their hats. 2 Express Passes will be awarded to the winners of the first leg.

American Idol, Ep. 13.12

Tonight it's the guys turn. 10 will be chosen by the judges to perform.

Performances:

Caleb
"Stay With Me" by Faces
Caleb is just awesome. He is such a great performer. He nails the performances and he nails the vocals. Watch out for Caleb, people! And he just looks like he's having fun on the stage, which makes it very enjoyable to watch.

C.J.
"Shelter" by Ray LaMontagne
I LOVE C.J.! He is one of my favorites. I love his personality and I LOVE his voice. He is the complete package. This wasn't the best song for him I don't think. I think he sang well, but I didn't care for the song. And then we find out he had a root canal yesterday! Wow!

Emmanuel
"The Best of My Love" by The Emotions
Of course this would be his song. This is very "him". Of course I hate this song, and it sure doesn't make me like him any better. And I was totally right about him. After he got put through in the audition rounds, I said "he's going to be that kind of annoying guy who keeps squeaking through each round, and then he's just going to keep getting through no matter how bad or annoying he is. I've heard him do so much better than he did on this song. I don't think he was on any of the notes, it just sounded wrong. I couldn't tell if he was sharp or flat, it was just that strange. I don't know what else to say about it.

Sam
"Babylon" by David Gray
I LOVE SAM! Another one of my favorites! He sounded so good! You can tell he worked on his stage presence. I just love his voice. I could listen to him sing forever.

George
"Grenade" by Bruno Mars
Great song choice. I like what he did with this song. This guy can definitely sing. He really put a lot of feeling into the song, and it was a great performance. He had one squeaky note, but other than that, it was really good.  His last note was killer!

Dexter
"This Ole Boy" by Craig Morgan
This is the type of country song that will make me get tired of him really quickly. I've been a fan of his, even though he is country. There was something about his voice and what he could do to a song. This is just too country for me to like. He sang it well, but I didn't really care for it.

Alex
"Volcano" by Damien Rice
Phillip Phillips was the last person to sing this song. In a way, he's got a lot of Phillip Phillips characteristics that I never realized until he sang this song. He's quirky and funny, and he moves in a kind of strange way when he sings like Phillip does. Even parts of his voice and the way he sings is similar. I can't believe I never noticed the similarities before. I think he did a great job, and he sounded amazing.

Malcolm
"Coming from Where I'm From" by Anthony Hamilton
This was a really cool performance. He hit every note. I can't say I loved the song, but I liked his performance.

Ben
"Soulshine" by the Allman Brothers
I liked this performance a lot more than I thought I would. He picked the perfect song for his voice and style. He also had a really cool guitar solo in the middle. He really performed the heck out of it. It was actually, surprisingly, one of my favorite performances of the night.

Spencer
"Love Don't Die" by The Fray
I LOVE SPENCER! And I LOVE this song! It's one of my favorites right now. It's not necessarily what we've seen from him so far, but he made it work. I don't think it was his best performance, but it was still very good.

So, I'm not as happy with the judges' picks for the guys as I was for the girls. I would not have picked Emmanuel, for sure. He is by far my least favorite. Ben (before hearing tonight's performance), George and Malcolm would be on the bubble for me. I say that because: how do you not put Maurice in the Top 10? Briston Maroney was also one of my favorites that they didn't put through. I'm really surprised they didn't put Casey through, because they've really liked him in the past. I also question them picking Ben because he was one of those that they couldn't decide between him and Neco. They couldn't decide on him, but yet they pick him to be in the Top 10? That doesn't seem quite right.

American Idol, Ep. 13.11

Rush Week: The Top 15 Girls Perform

The judges will only pick 10 girls to perform. The 10 that they are the most impressed with. To get them ready, Randy Jackson will be mentoring them in a workshop. Also helping along the way, 2 of my all-time faves: Adam Lambert and Chris Daughtry!

Performances:

Majesty Rose
"Happy" by Pharrell
I just think she is so cute. She has a great personality. Pair that with a great voice, and this girl is going places. She nailed this performance. She had a good balance of singing and guitar playing.

Kristen
"Turning Tables" by Adele
I love this song for her, great choice. She had a lot of really nice moments and a big note. I thought she performed well. She had some awkward breathing moments, but it wasn't too noticeable. I think she has some growing to do yet, and a lot of potential to do really well. I think the song showed off her range and the different tones she has to her voice.

Briana
"Warrior" by Demi Lovato
What a strong performance. I haven't always been a huge fan of hers, but I loved this performance. I think she killed it! She showed a lot of emotion and her vocals were spot-on.

Jena
"Paint it Black" by Rolling Stones
I love this song, but I don't know that it's the right choice for her. I just don't think this worked for her at all. I've loved her voice, but it just didn't sound right on this song. Her tempo was off, and it seemed like it was really dragging. The big note at the end was good, but then it kind of went sharp.

Bria
"Wrong Side of a Love Song" by Melanie Fiona
I've never heard of this song or this artist, which is unusual for me. She really belted this song out. It wasn't all good for me though. I'm sure the judges and the audience didn't hear anything wrong with it,but I heard some missed notes and some shakiness that kept it from being a really great performance. She has potential if she can rein it in and get some control. Thank you to Harry for calling her out for shouting!

Marialle
"Roar" by Katy Perry
I love this girl. I love her song choices, I love her voice, I love her personality. Unfortunately, this performance wasn't as good as I hoped it would be. There were some pitch issues, and it just kind of seemed fake and overproduced. I wish she wouldn't have sung in such a low key. I think it would have been better in a higher key. The second half of the song was definitely better than the first half. I totally agreed with the judges' critiques on this one.

Jessica
"Drink a Beer" by Luke Bryan
You can tell she's not real comfortable singing someone else's song. I think her nerves got the better of her. Her voice was really shaky, and it seemed like she was about to forget the words in a couple places. It was an OK performance, but it wasn't great.

Emily
"Paris (Ooh La La)" by Grace Potter and the Nocturnals
I love this song when it's done right. I didn't know if she'd have it in her to pull off this song or not, but she brought the house down. I love this girl. I think her vocals were immaculate, and her pitch and tone were really great. She also performed the song really well. She didn't hold back and she made it very believable.

MK
"All of Me" by John Legend
By far her best performance. She's always had a good voice, but her performances were always so dry and bland. She actually sang with some life. Her high notes at the end weren't quite there, but it was still a really good performance. She wouldn't have been my pick for Top 10 though.

Malaya
"Hard Times" by Ray Charles
I'm so on the fence with her, just because she's so strange! Her voice is there, but there's a lot of immaturity there personality-wise. I hated the song choice. She performed it well, but it was a little too over the top. She's another one who needs to learn to keep it under control a little more.

Also, we found out the results of the last spot for the guys between Ben Briley and Neco Starr. The winner was Ben Briley. Tomorrow night is the guys' turns.

The gang travels to New Zealand

1-on-1 Date: Andi
So apparently, New Zealand is the perfect place for JP and Andi. Why? You're guess is as good as mine.

First, they take off in a speed boat as part of their adventurous date. The boat takes them down a river and then in the middle of the river, the driver said this is where they get out. This place is called "The Squeeze", and Juan Pablo is way over-excited. So, they have to wade through waist-high water into some creepy cavernous rocks. It's so narrow, they can barely fit. How funny would it be if he went the wrong way and they got lost/stuck? Eventually, they do make it to a waterfall and a hotspring. You know how romantic it is when people kiss under a waterfall? Well, this wasn't just a normal waterfall, they were being completely pummeled!

At the end of the date, they talk about how they both want a family and want to be in love. With that, he offers Andi the rose, which she obviously accepts. She also impresses him when she pulls out "Dame un besito".

American Idol, Ep. 13.8

Tonight we see the fallout from the beginning of the Group Rounds last night. Who will pull it together, who will choke? Can't wait to find out!

At least 1/2 will be going home in this round! Whoa!

David, Tony and Sarina start it off with some awesome harmony and originality at the end of the song. Good for them. All 3 have been here before, and David and Sarina move on, while Tony goes home. Props to Tony for politely wanting to know why he got let go, and props to the judges for actually giving an answer, and some criticism and something to work on. Very well done on both parts there, it's nice to see.

This is the one I've been waiting to see: Backstreet Cowboys -- Dexter, Casey and Ben. They sing the Backstreet Boys' "I Want It That Way". Individually, they weren't as strong as they normally are. I did like their harmonies though. I think these guys could give Restless Road from X Factor a run for their money! Not surprisingly, they all make it through!

Briana, Mk and a 3rd someone did an amazing job with Lorde's "Royals". It was like, seriously, really good, and they all went through.

American Idol, Ep. 13.7

This week marks the beginning of the new Hollywood week. I say "new" only because this won't be like the Hollywood weeks that we are used to. I don't know a lot of specifics, but I'm kind of hoping that one of the changes is the removal of the dreaded group round. The first major change is that each singer has to sing right away upon arriving, and if the judges don't like them, they are going home...right away! Like Harry says "If you screw this up, it's over!"

212 singers have made it to Hollywood...how many won't make it past the first round? They think they are on their way to the hotel, but they are secretly being brought to an airplane hanger where they will have to sing, and if they don't make it, they won't even make it to the hotel!

One thing we are sure to see are at least a few of our early favorites completely bombing. It happens every time. Forgotten song lyrics, balls of nerves, or both. Another thing we are sure to see are people we don't remember from the auditions, who now, we question how they ever made it to Hollywood, because it is apparent that they CAN'T SING at all! I'm very excited to see some of my favorites, and see who emerges as possible front-runners, and see if anyone comes out of nowhere and really blows me away.

Here we go! And go they do...they fly through singer after singer. Way too many singers to comment on. 160 singers made it through without having to sing again. They wanted to hear about 50 people that they were on the fence with.

After they listen to the 50 singers, they separate them into 2 buses: one bus is going to the hotel, the other bus is going to the airport. They have no idea where they are going! Bus 1 went to the airport, with one of my favorites: Johnny Newcomb. Bus 2 had a few that I liked (one being Adam Roth, the musical therapy guy who they just found weird, but I knew had something special), so I'm pretty happy about that. 20 from bus 2 made, which means there were 30 people cut.

Round 2 for Hollywood week: In groups of 10, they come out and sing and they will be told to stay or go.

The Bachelor, Ep. 18.5

Episode Summary
  • 1-on-1 Date: Renee (gets a rose)
  • 1-on-1 Date: Nikki (gets a rose)
  • Group Date: Clare gets the rose
  • Rose Ceremony Eliminations (3): Alli, Danielle, Kelly
  • Remaining Girls (8): Andi, Cassandra, Chelsie, Clare, Kat, Nikki, Renee, Sharleen

The group is now in Vietnam. Oh, so exciting. That would not be on my top 100 places to ever want to go.

1-on-1 Date: Renee
So maybe TODAY will be the day of Renee's first kiss with Juan Pablo. If it doesn't happen today, that should be a pretty big sign that this isn't going to go much further.

He takes her for a ride on a pedicab, which he is biking. That was a little weird. For their first stop, he takes her to a dress shop and she is going to get a dress specially made for her. She was really sweaty when the lady was measuring her, so he ran across the street to get a fan for her.

They also shop for the kids and get Ben a hat and Camila a little dress.

At dinner, Renee got to wear the dress, and it looked really good on her. They picked well.

The dinner conversation started around Ben's dad and their relationship. He loves to hear her talk about Ben. She loves to hear him talk about Camila. I think they are definitely, 100% on the same page as far as their kids, and kids in general go. Then it got a little awkward. It felt like she was really trying for a kiss. She was acting all hot again, so...he blew on her face. I kind of feel like he is finding every reason NOT to kiss her. I think with any of the other girls, he would have kissed her like 10 times already. He really seems to like her, so is it just because she also has a kid? Or does this mean that he actually has MORE feelings for her than the rest?

Obviously he likes her, and she gets a rose. And still...no kiss...yet.

To end the date, they make wishes on lanterns and hen release them in the water. Any guesses what her wish was?

Juan Pablo, in an ITM (In the Moment), says he really wants to kiss her, but because she has a son who is old enough to know what is going on, he wants to take his time. "So, it's not gonna happen."

Group Date
