Dancing With The Stars, Ep. 19.12

The Semi-Finals!

It's a good sign to see Alfonso in the dancing introductions! News broke a few days ago that he severely injured his back during rehearsals. He could barely walk and was not dancing to practice. It was uncertain if he would be able to compete or not.

Round 1: Plugged Version of the Song

Sadie & Mark - Quickstep
In rehearsals Sadie was so rattled by forgetting a little bit of the dance last week. She showed none of that during this dance at all! She came out like the energetic and confident girl we have come to know and love. This was a crazy Quickstep, and I love the little modern hip-hop moves that Mark threw in there. It was a really cool routine! I'm so glad she bounced back from that moment of insecurity.
Score: 37 (10 from Len!)

Tommy & Peta - Jazz
Immediately when I heard the song "Tainted Love" start playing, I just had to laugh. Such a funny song for him to do. Peta didn't disappoint with this fun and quirky choreography. Unfortunately, I think he got a little lost at times and it seemed a little disjointed as he tried to pick it back up again. But it's always fun to watch him having fun.
Score: 28

Bethany & Derek - Samba
I was like, "that's not Derek on the bench with her!" It was Sasha. Then Derek jumps over the bench and just butt-bumps him right off. Cute! It was a strange song choice for a Samba, and it didn't feel like a normal Samba. You would never know by this fun and cute routine that Derek had a major mental block with coming up with the choreography this week. He always comes through, and every performance is always top-notch. He is just an amazing man. Love him!
Score: 36

Janel & Val - Paso Doble
Can we just talk about Val and Maks dancing together as a couple in rehearsals! How cute was that!

This is not a song I would think of for a Paso, but as it hits the chorus it does really pick up. She looks so fierce in all black! She was really rockin' it, and that was some powerful dancing. She is really incredible, and I just love her chemistry with Val. That dance seemed way too short...I want more! (Just like Carrie Ann said!)
Score: 40!

Alfonso & Witney - Argentine Tango
I hate seeing him in so much pain! The Argentine Tango calls for lifts, so we'll see what they come up with to compensate. For the first time, you can tell that he's being very cautious and trying not to overextend himself. Normally, he would be so extended with his legs, and he would be twisting and turning his upper body, but he's a little more stiff. Which is TOTALLY understandable given the extent of his injury. That said, he still pulled off a very, very good and fun routine. Even as he stands to get his scores, you can see how much p he's in..he's in tears, and I'm in tears for him!
Score: 36

Round 2: Unplugged Version of the Song

Sadie & Mark - Argentine Tango
What an interesting tempo for this dance. The acoustic version is 100% different than the original. Mark's choreography showed off the really cool leg hooks that are such a huge part of this dance. It was really cool when she picked up the guitar, and he did a spinning lift with her. Very interesting, but very cool.
Score: 37 (Total 74)

Tommy & Peta - Rumba
Peta's dress looks like something from The Sound of Music...not normally something you would see for a Rumba. I'm very interested to see how they make "Tainted Love" into a romantic Rumba. So not The Sound of Music, but Chitty Chitty Bang Bang...as she is a doll coming to life! Ha! I'm not sure what the song has to do with this doll concept, but it sure is interesting. I have to say that I don't really see a lot of Rumba content, but maybe I'm just so distracted by the costume. That said, it was a beautiful and elegant dance.
Score: 34 (Total 62)

Bethany & Derek - Contemporary
Oh Yes! Shirtless Derek! It's about time! OK, now the dance. I love the beginning with them in this picture frame. So creative all the different ways they danced inside, around, with and in between the frame. Holy crap, Derek! They used it through the entire dance, and it was just absolutely amazing! I can't even....just wow. That was just so cool! Oh, and that version of the song was so different...I honestly couldn't tell what song it was.
Score: 40 (Total 76)

Janel & Val - Argentine Tango
OK, so I can't tell if Val is really playing that violin or not...it totally looked like he was! I don't care for what they did with this song at all! There's no vocals :( OMG that lift spin! That was ridiculously fast! She had her legs around his neck and he was spinning so fast!! Very nicely done.
Score: 38 (Total 78)

Alfonso & Witney - Contemporary
So, yes, that's Christina Grimmie who was on The Voice. This was a powerful piece. I'm so proud of Alfonso for being able to pull this off with his injury. There was lot of quick, jerky movements that I'm sure couldn't have felt good. He looked even better on this dance than he did on the first one. Len said it best, it had a lot of drama. It was so good!
Score: 29 (Total 75)

The Results
In Jeopardy: Sadie & Mark, Tommy & Peta
Going Home: Tommy & Peta

At this point it was going to be really sad to lose anyone. I truly love all of these final 5. Part of me would have really loved to see him make it to the final, for several reasons: (1) He has worked so hard (2) It is such an accomplishment for his age (3) He didn't rely just on comedy...he truly had some moves (4) He would be so much fun to watch, and I would love to see his freestyle!

That said, absolutely the best 4 dancers are left in this competition, and they are going to put on an incredible finale! I'm so happy for Alfonso, Sadie, Janel and Bethany!
