Survivor, Ep. 30.14: Finale

It's hard to believe that we are just a couple hours away from knowing who the winner of season 30 is! Best case scenario: the Final 3 are Mike, Carolyn, and Rodney and Mike wins. Worst case scenario: the Final 3 are Will, Sierra, and Rodney and Will or Sierra wins. It's obvious that Will and Sierra have done nothing but be followers. They made no moves and have no argument for why they should win. Rodney at least has worked on keeping his alliance together and on top of the numbers. Other than that, he doesn't really have anything else. Mike has worked his butt off, and while making just one mistake (a pretty big mistake), he has done just about everything right, including finding a hidden immunity idol and playing it at the exact right time, winning immunities when he most needed to, and more. Carolyn has also played a decent game, including an idol of her own (and playing it at the exact right time), and winning individual immunities. They've both had pretty good social games and have been instrumental players in their alliances. The season will really go down the tubes if neither Mike nor Carolyn make the finals. It's going to be pretty impossible for them both to make it because they are both on the outs now. Last week, Mike and Carolyn voted Dan, while the rest of the group all voted for Carolyn. Mike and Carolyn are the targets, and whoever doesn't win immunity is going home. But how sweet would it be for one of them to find a hidden idol and for the other one to win immunity! Hey, at least I can dream :)

Merica Camp
Carolyn asks Will if he voted Dan, and he said "no". Yet Carolyn still goes off with the group, leaving Mike alone. Carolyn says they all voted for her, but they said that she never told them about the idol. She thinks that with Mike as their common enemy, they are all still good.

Reward Challenge

Challenge: crawl through a net crawl, shoot tiles like air hockey, then carry tiles on a sword through an obstacle, then arrange tiles. 3 tiles don't match and that's the code to open a chest.
Reward: FAMILY TIME! Everyone is in tears! And the winner also gets an advantage in the next Immunity Challenge.

How in the world did Will get out of the net crawl way in first place?! That visit from his wife must have really energized him! "Will has not been in a challenge in a long time!" shouts Jeff.

Mike makes it with tiles to the first station, and he's in first. He is flying over the teeter totters! Will has dropped his tiles and has to start over for the 2nd time. Will drops for a third time and takes a header right into the platform! Ouch!

Mike has all of his tiles and is ready to arrange his tiles. Sierra is ready to match her tiles.

Mike thinks he has the right combination but he pulls and it doesn't work. He tries a 2nd time and it's still not right. Sierra is closing in.

3rd time's the charm and Mike wins time with his mom AND an all-important advantage in the next Immunity Challenge. For some reason this time, they didn't have the winner also select someone to get time with their loved one. That's good for Mike because he didn't have to choose and make all of the other's mad. I'm happy Mike won, but I hope he didn't expend too much energy in the challenge...he needs to be ready for the Immunity Challenge!

Merica Camp
Mike's mom fits in well at camp. For some reason, Sierra is hanging ALL OVER Mike..that's just a little weird. She seems very cool, and I like their loving relationship...so sweet! Him having her there is only going to help give him the energy he needs to push for the last few days.

Mike's Advantage: The challenge is going to be a maze that they will go through blindfolded. His advantage is 30 minutes to explore the maze blindfolded with his mom guiding him. This could be huge! Except she took him a lot of wrong ways, and she could see! And before you know it, their time is up.  Hopefully the time they had will still give him a leg up and be enough for him to win.

Immunity Challenge
Challenge: navigate a maze blindfolded and collect 4 medallions and then the immunity necklace.

Mike getting very close to 1 medallion, while Sierra just literally passed by 1. Mike gets the E medallion! Sierra finally literally bumped into the medallion.

Mike gets #2 and Rodney is right there with him at the same medallion. Mike gets #3! And Rodney cops a feel on Mike as they cross paths. Rodney just helped Sierra and Will find the station that he was just at. Carolyn is asking for help. She now has 1.

Mike is getting close to #4 and he has it! Woohoo! One piece to go! He's at the guidepost and he knows his direction. Slowly but surely he finds his way to the necklace and it's his! The other 4 are so disgusted, but this wasn't even close. Was it the advantage? Not sure, but I think it did seem to help.

Merica Camp
Mike, Carolyn, and Sierra talk about voting Will because he doesn't do anything around camp (is this the first round? Who votes like that at this stage?) Mike tells Carolyn he won't vote for her. The 3 decide to make a pact to go to the final 3, and they decide to vote Rodney because he is pretty much done anyway.

Mike and Rodney go for a walk. Rodney says that he has Will's vote, and the 3 guys can go to the Final 3 and they would vote out Sierra. Looks like Mike has 2 Final 3 deals, but I know that they won't honor that if Mike doesn't win immunity. So the question is: which alliance will Mike vote with? Surprisingly, how is Mama C's name not on the chopping block?

Tribal Council
This is crazy. If they don't take out Mama C, they are crazy. Next to Mike she is the next biggest threat.

The Votes
Sierra
Rodney
Sierra
Sierra

Very interesting. Sierra thinks they voted her out because they saw her as a threat. Nope, that wasn't it. I'm still not quite sure how they decided on her.

Final Immunity Challenge
Challenge: untie knots to open a gate, then climb a huge tower. They slide down a water slide and collect 3 bags of puzzles. First person to get it right wins.

Mike takes the early lead but Will and Carolyn are not far behind. Rodney is sprinting! It's amazing he has any energy with as little as he has been eating.

That is such a long way to run and there are so many steps! They are going to be dead after this challenge.

I'm impressed that Will is moving as good as he is.

Mike has 2 bags and on his way to his 3rd. Rodney has 2 bags and he is still sprinting! Carolyn has #2. Will is now slowing way down and is falling out of the challenge.

Mike is working on the puzzle. Rodney is making up time and so is Carolyn...oh no! I thought Mike had a little bit more of a lead than that!

Rodney is now falling out of it, but Carolyn is hanging in there. Mike is getting piece after piece...he is flying! And one more piece to go...he's got it! MIKE WINS!

In a VERY strange occurrence for any season...they all hug each other. Will said he is a changed person from this experience. He wanted to be the one to put the necklace on Mike. What a nice moment from a cast who has had some not-so-nice moments. I am so excited! I screamed so loud that my throat now hurts! At the beginning, I never would have imagined myself rooting for Mike. I really didn't care for him at all. But, with Joe gone, and a few others that I liked, Mike's gameplay spoke for itself. He played the best game, and he became an underdog because of the huge target on his back. He deserved the win before, but winning 5 immunity challenges and winning the last 2 when he ABSOLUTELY HAD TO? Winning in the clutch speaks volumes to his talent. He outranks people like Ozzy and Malcolm who pulled off impressive wins but choked on the last one, when it really counted.

Who can't wait to see Dan's disgusted face when Mike walks in with the necklace? :)

Merica Camp
Who would have thunk that it would now be Mike the only one safe and the other 3 scrambling.

Rodney reassures Will that they are best buds. Will had a hilarious quote about Mike not taking Carolyn and how that would be stupid because you don't bring someone with "Mama" in their name to the end. Mike said he was Blue all the way until Dan, Sierra, and Rodney turned on him, so he doesn't want any of them sitting on the jury.

Mike tells Carolyn that he won't vote for her because he meant what he said about being in the final with her. He wants the votes to end up in a tie between Rodney and Carolyn so that it would go to a fire-making challenge. He told her she should practice making fire all afternoon. If she could win that, she could prove to them that she deserves to be there. Mike, what are you thinking? You don't want to help out your biggest competition! He said he would much rather lose to Carolyn than to take 2 goats to the end. You have to respect that, but that's a Woo move. I have to hope that he still beats Carolyn if they both end up in the Final 3.

Tribal Council
Rodney is "feelin' some sort of way" because he found out "Caroline" wanted to vote him out, and he thinks that she is in a pickle.

I'm really hoping for a fire challenge...we haven't seen that in forever!!! That would be epic!

The Votes
Rodney
Carolyn
Carolyn
Rodney

We have a tie!!! Yes!!!!!! This is awesome! I actually kind of hope Rodney wins this. Yes, Carolyn deserves it more, but I don't want there to be any chance of Mike not winning.

And Dan is laughing hysterically over in the jury!

Tie-Breaker
I still can't believe we are finally getting a fire challenge! Seriously how long has it been?

Jeff's comments definitely don't help in a life or death situation.

Carolyn breaks her flint, and Jeff gives her a back-up flint. Seriously? No back-up flints!

20 minutes in and no fire yet. Rodney asks for another flint. He's now on his 3rd flint. And with that, Carolyn breaks her flint and she gets another one. This is really ridiculous!

45 minutes and no fire. Rodney is striking so hard, he might chop his finger off! Jeff keeps making fun of them and says that if they were alone in the jungle, they would be in trouble.

Rodney is the first to get fire, but he can't keep it going and it dies. At 53 minutes, he gets it again, with a bigger flame this time.

Carolyn now gets a fire going. Their husks are quickly burning out. Carolyn is building up, but Rodney is really getting some good flames. It is down to seconds....who is it going to be?

Rodney's fire looked good, but his coconut husk burnt quickly and his fire died down. Carolyn's fire started to grow and she added some other wooden pieces and that was enough. Carolyn wins...wow!

Yes, Rodney was very upset that that's how his game ended. He was NOT happy with Mike AT ALL for making him do a fire challenge (somehow it was all Mike's fault). He called him a redneck and said he was going to get what was coming to him. Later, after he had cooled down, he said that the experience had really helped him get over his sister.

Merica Camp
The 3 briefly talk about what they did to get this far. I think it is kind of cool that there is 1 Blue Collar, 1 White Collar and 1 Red Collar left.

Mike thinks the vote will be close because there are a lot of people who don't like him and are mad at him for what he did and the fact that he kept wining. I hope that this jury respects gameplay.

Jury Questions

Wow, they didn't even get a chance to make final statements? Apparently no one said anything important and they cut it for time. That's a first. I actually would like to see what Will would have said.

Joe:
  • He said his vote was an open vote and they need to earn it. No questions for anyone really, and they didn't respond to anything.
  • Will: "man up" and own your game.
  • Mama C was cold and didn't build relationships.
  • Mike won 5 necklaces, he wants to know what else he did.
  • Sorry Joe, but you didn't even ask a question, so this was kind of lame.
Hali:
  • She enjoyed playing with Mama C. She played the mother, and wanted to know how was that a disadvantage. Carolyn said they didn't see her as a true player and she hopes they wil see her strategy.
Rodney:
  • Will is his BB "best boy" (insert gag noise). He wants to know how he secured his place in the game. Will said he brought what he had as a person - he was a friend and was giving. he knew he would be an underdog.
  • Mama C: What power moves did she make and did she make them herself? She said she went with Tyler and he is on the jury, and next was Dan. She said when they voted for her, she went to her backup plan of Mike.
Tyler:
  • Mike: He put everyone on the jury, what did he bring to the table as a redeemable character. He wanted to do better socially than he did. He said he failed socially. He wanted to make bonds and for them to see him as a genuine person. He said maybe he does suck.
  • Carolyn: He protected her for 30 days and he is heartbroken and gutted - what can she do to redeem herself in his eyes. She said his vote was the hardest. Survivor makes you do things that you aren't proud of and if you don't, you end up on the jury.
Sierra:
  • Will: Which trait from the other 3 players does he wish he had. Mike's work ethic, but not his approach. Carolyn - she analyzed things before she put them in motion.
Jenn:
  • She talks to the jury and said they are so bitter and mad at Mike for playing the game. Mike is the only one to outwit, outplay, and outlast. If they are superfans, they should vote for the best player.
Dan:
  • Mike - Colby proved that just because you win immunity doesn't mean you win. He didn't care about the people he put on the jury. There is no necklace to save him tonight. Mike said his biggest regret was losing Dan's trust. He was truly sorry and it goes beyond gameplay and he hopes they can be friends. Dan said that was the most genuine thing he has said since the auction.
Shirin:
  • She said she stood up for herself against Will and she didn't need a protector, but she had one in Mike. He saved her when no one else would. That was a million dollar moment and felt better than her earning her first million at 25. She said that doesn't mean that he has her vote because she is a superfan who will vote for the best player, and Carolyn is in the running. She equated Mike to a howler monkey who was loud and would throw feces in your face. Carolyn was like a stingray and when someone threatens her, she'll sting you and get out of there. Will is the dead fish that they bring in, in the net. If you eat him, he will kill you from within. She quoted Sue Hawk: "when we go to vote, let it be how mother nature intended it."
Shirin -- that was pretty epic

The Votes
So, Rodney voted for Will because he was his best friend. That's cute Rodney, you wanted to spare Will from getting absolutely 0 votes. Lame.

I really, really hope Mike has this!

Mike
Will
Carolyn
Mike
Mike
Mike

And the winner of Survivor Season 30 is...MIKE!!!!! Woohoo! He's no Joe, but the most deserving person in the final 6 won.

Reunion Hi-lights
  • Carolyn honestly thought she would get more votes, and is on edge thinking about the possibility of getting voted on the Second Chance season.
  • Joe is INSANELY popular...him getting voted onto the Second Chance season is highly likely. And, most importantly: he's single! Joe, if you're reading this (because I'm sure you are...yeah right), my number is...awe, who am I kidding, he literally just left on a bus to play Survivor again :)
  • Rodney thinks he would have won if he won the fire challenge. They revote, taking Carolyn out, and he gets 2 votes: Jenn (who grandstanded for Mike to win) and Dan
  • Dan sincerely apologizes to Shirin
  • Dan feels like the show is throwing him under the bus by misportraying his comments. Jeff pulls out raw footage to prove Dan wrong about his comment about calling Rodney's mom a whore. He claimed they were joking "yo mama jokes" for 1/2 hour, but footage doesn't show any of that. Dan said he was clearly remembering things wrong. Jeff thinks his problem is that his jokes come off wrong...just like his shirt that says "Mail Escort".
  • Will defends, sort of, his decision to not apologize to Shirin in the game. He said he apologized at Ponderosa, Shirin said it was very weak. She said he only apologized after the public reacted to the episode negatively. Jeff asked again if he wanted to apologize. He said "I should apologize to her." He apologized to her family, and then seemed to give a genuine apology to Shirin. She said they can start the forgiveness process, but she wants to make sure that he never treats anyone the way he treated her, and to do that, she needs to understand why someone with no soul deserves to be treated that way
  • Jeff brings out a cake and they all sing "Happy Birthday" to him, and he gets a hat and everything! Jeff said he hated that he was on an island, being broadcast on CBS week after week, only to endure his worst birthday ever.
And with that, we say goodbye to this season's cast :( What a bummer for them, that their reunion has to get cut short by 15 minutes so that they can announce next season's cast. There were so many people we didn't get to hear from. A couple of unanswered questions I have:
  • Vince - is he really that crazy or was it an act?
  • Joaquin - is he jealous that Rodney called Will his best friend and basically forgot all about their bromance?
  • So - does she regret going along with Joaquin's idea to lie about their dilemma on day 1?
  • Nina - how does she really feel about CBS totally putting her on a tribe that she didn't belong on and trying to convince her that she was a No Collar?
