Josh Groban hosts the show, while Brad Paisley, Kesha and Ludacris serve as judges, or "experts". The 3 judges will be voting live along with America..
Groban met with the singers auditioning as they prepared for the show and gave them some mentoring. So, he's not just the host!
- A singer stands behind a huge wall and sings for a minute and 30 seconds
- Viewers at home vote live "Yes" or "No" using the Rising Star app that you can download for free from the Apple, GooglePlay and Windows stores
- Swipe right --> for YES and swipe left <-- for NO
- Viewers must "check in" on the app before EVERY singer
- Note: if a viewer checks in, and does not vote, it counts as a "no" vote
- If the singer gets to 70% yeses, the wall will be raised and they will move on, if they don't they are eliminated
- The judges' scores count for 7%
- The show is live, but when shown on the west coast, those viewers can still vote...if enough of them vote "Yes" for a singer who was eliminated, that singer could be saved
Once you download the app to your smartphone, and connect to your Facebook account, you're ready to go. For each performance, you'll need to Check In, and then make your Yes or No vote...

Who can audition? Anyone! Solo artists, duets and groups are all welcome. The show also asked people to submit 15 second videos on Instagram on why they should be on the show. Groban went into the audience and found one of those people. They then sent her backstage to learn a song and with about 30 minutes of prep time, she will be auditioning!

On the first night of auditions, here's the results (as of the East Coast viewing). Remember, if they get a percentage of yeses above 70% they make it through.

My Thoughts on Night 1
Overall, I think the show was actually pretty cool. The live, interactive element really makes things exciting. It definitely brings something new to the table, as far as singing competitions go.
As I expected, I could really care less about the "judges". I've never been a fan of any of them, and chemistry (or lack there of), was actually kind of awkward at times. Kesha trying to swipe Ludacris's screen felt a little staged. We'll see if things improve as the season goes on.
As for the contestants, as a whole, they were pretty good, with a couple of standouts. My favorites of the night were Jesse Kinch (by a mile) and Macy Kate. I absolutely love Jesse's voice. Josh Groban said that his speaking voice and singing voice were very different, and boy, he wasn't kidding! I loved his strong, raspy tone. Macy was amazing. I do have to wonder just how "surprising" her being picked out of the audience was. For someone with no intention of performing that night, and only a half hour to prepare...she seemed awfully prepared. Not that it really matters that much, but I just thought we'd see a more raw performance. If she really did put that together in that half hour...props to her because it was amazing!!!
I really felt bad for Daniel and Olivia, to only get 6%. Ouch! I really wanted to like them, but they just weren't that good. Maybe it was the song, maybe it was nerves...or maybe it was both, but they are no Alex & Sierra.
I can't wait to see how the season plays out and what other tricks they have up their sleeves to "break all the rules" as Josh Groban put it :)
