Dancing with the Stars, Ep. 21.5

Theme: Most Memorable Year

As if the stories of the night aren't emotional enough, there were 2 big announcements: Allison is 4 months pregnant and Witney just got engaged! Add to that that Tom is taking the night off to be with his ailing father, so Alfonso Ribeiro is filling in. Wow.

Alexa & Mark - Foxtrot
Year: 2000 - she booked the movie Spy Kids

I love the visual affects of rain...I don't know how they do that! It was nice to see her doing a ballroom dance, because we haven't really seen that from her yet. She did a great job, and she was so cute with her little glasses! It seemed maybe a little more bouncy than foxtrots normally are, so it will be interesting to see what the judges say. It kind of reminded me of Singing in the Rain.
Score: 21

Gary & Anna - Jazz
Year: 1979 - starred in Buddy Holly Story

Well...let's just say...he doesn't look too much like Buddy Holly anymore. The black hair was way fake! This was just kind of all over the place. He was shaking all over the place...I couldn't tell if that was part of the dance or not. Yikes...that was just weird. Even weirder than the Adamms family last week.
Score: 16

Tamar & Val - Rumba
Year: 2012 - her husband almost died

What a beautiful, moving dance. She is dancing to her own single, so that makes this even more emotional. She really brought out the emotion for this dance. Val does such a good job with this style (OK, who are we kidding...he's good at all styles, but I always feel something special and emotional with his rumbas). The song was beautiful, she was beautiful, her dress was beautiful, their connection was beautiful. The whole thing was just lovely.
Score: 27

Hayes & Emma - Contemporary
Year: 2014 - came out of his shell and became a success on Vine

It's cool that he is dancing to his friend, Shawn Mendes's song "Stitches". This was such a good routine. They were very connected and in sync. It was too short! I wanted more! He looked really mature in this dance.
Score: 27

Alek & Lindsay - Paso Doble
Year: 2015 - crazy year: in Afghanistan, trip to Europe, stopped gunman on a train, received awards and met the President, and now Dancing with the Stars; shooting in Oregon is where he went to college and where he planned to go back to and would have been at if the events earlier in the year hadn't happened...wow...just wow

So many emotions going into this dance. I had goosebumps even before it started. This song isn't one I would normally pick for the Paso, but it somehow worked. He had no trouble bringing out the masculinity...but I thought he could have brought more toughness to it. It felt like some of his arm movements just weren't very sharp.
Score: 24

Nick & Sharna - Jazz
Year: 1992 - the year he joined The Backstreet Boys

There are no words. What a tribute to his boys. They pulled 300 fans onto the floor and made it look like a real concert...so cool! That has never been done before! Dancing to "Backstreet's Back", was just so perfect! He nailed all the solo parts, their partner work was great. It was the bomb! Julianne even made him a cute little sign. Such a big moment for him! Loved everything about this. I've grown up watching and listening to him and The Backstreet Boys, and I'm glad everyone gets to see where he comes from. If you aren't aware...he is STILL a Backstreet Boy, and they ARE STILL a group and ARE STILL making GREAT music! They are not in the past...they just keep going. So don't be thinking he's a washed up has-been!
Score: 27 (what, no 10s?)

Carlos & Witney - Waltz
Year: 2012 - the year his band, Big Time Rush was at their peak; he hit rock bottom and was smoking a lot of weed; he decided to go to church with his dad and his life changed - he got invited to a Bible study and he met his wife (awe!)

He decided to dance to "Amazing Grace" because it was the first song he heard in church. They were all dressed in white, with really bright white lights shining on them. The lights were a little too bright and you couldn't really see them dancing. I know that was probably intentional to signify "blinding", but I would have liked a little less blinding light so I could see their faces. The dance was beautiful, and his story was beautiful. I got some goosebumps on that one.
Score: 25

Paula & Louis - Cha Cha
Year: 1989 - the year she decided to end her marriage and started her own business

Well, that's about the slowest Cha Cha I've ever seen. She was able to move her hips...a little bit...but boy was it slow. I think that's probably the most confident she has looked doing her steps and she didn't look too lost. However, there were a lot of places where they stopped (intentionally) for her to maybe catch a break, and then think about the next set of steps.
Score: 18

Andy & Allison - Cha Cha
Year: 2009 - the year his mom passed away; they only had a few days from her diagnosis until she passed away; he wrote his first hit "Keep Your Head Up"

He's dancing to his new single, so that makes this dance even more personal. What a fun and uplifting song and dance. I love watching him let loose and have fun. I so enjoyed this and I hope the judges reward him this week. they've been rather hard on him in previous weeks and seem to find things wrong with his dances every time. I sure hope they think this one was flawless, because I don't want to see him go home. And...Carrie Ann thinks there was something wrong...come on! At least Julianne and Bruno liked it!
Score: 23

Bindi & Derek - Contemporary
Year: 2006 - the year her dad, Steve Irwin died
Watching the video of her reading a tribute to her dad when she was so young, and to hear her talk about her dad now, just breaks my heart! And then learning the dance, she had a memory that she just burst into tears...so sad! She's such a fun and bubbly, positive girl, and to see her hurting is just so painful!

So, I'm in tears even before she starts dancing. I know that Derek is going to have choreographed the most beautiful dance ever for her. She shows her emotions in every dance, so it is no surprise that you could feel what she was feeling through this whole dance. But it wasn't sad, she was smiling nad hopeful at the beginning, and then it got more emotional at the end. She collapsed in his arms and broke down in real tears. What a moment.
Score: 28 (Bruno gave the first 10 of the season!)

Results

In Jeopardy: Carlos & Witney, Gary & Anna
Going Home: Gary & Anna

Wow...it had to happen...he deserved to go. I'm a little surprised that it was him though...his off-the-wall comments, I thought, would keep him around for awhile yet. Next week, please let it be Paula to go!

And, as live TV happens...Gary just keeps talking and talking and talking. He said him being voted out was false, because he and Anna's partnership will continue in the ballroom, even if they aren't there dancing. Wow...he is such a unique guy...no words can top that, I guess.
